Grooming Guide

As we were working on this website, I realized that it had been some time since we actually had a grooming guide as such on our site.  There are some very good books and videos on the groom of various breeds of dogs and cats, and I can't really add a great deal to the specific directions that you would find there.  If I have learned anything in the time I have been involved with grooming animals (which is approaching half a century, starting with farm animals when I was a teen) it is that there are very few hard and fast rules.  The one I want to emphasize today is:  KEEP IT CLEAN!  That means grooming regularly.  There is no magic product that can replace regular grooming.

No matter if you are grooming a fine show animal or a loved pet, short or long haired, clean is always best.  But please do it in a way that doesn't dry the skin and coat.  Don't try to cut corners with harsh products.  Leave the dish soap for dishes and hand cleaners for human hands.

Looking at an old grooming guide that I put together over fifteen years ago, I see that much of what I wrote then still applies.  Use good products correctly and Rinse, Rinse and Rinse again.  There are so many coat textures and types that vary even in the same litters that setting out a single method is pointless.  You need to be able to adjust to the needs of the individual animal.

This guide is going to be a work in progress for a long time.  Please feel free to comment or ask questions.  I will get back to you as quick as I can, but it may take a few days.  And please visit again to see what is being added.  I hope to update regularly and also add to the FAQs as well.
